IEEE PROCOMM: IEEE Communication Project Competition 2020

A Project competition was conducted by IEEE Communications Society Kerala Chapter . IEEE PROCOMM was an online technical project contest for the engineering students to showcase their innovative, path- breaking ideas. PROCOMM develops the student’s ability to work with his or her peers, build teamwork and group skills.
This was a team event. The abstract ideas were submitted for prelims online for which the submission was open from 14th Decā€™2020 to 15th Febā€™2021. There were two rounds for this contest, project abstract submission and project presentation. The “Final Project Presentation” was scheduled on 24th April 2021 at 5.00 pm IST. Judging Panels for were;
Sajini T – Joint Director CDAC ,Trivandrum,Dr Anjana P Das – AI specialist TATA ELXSI, Trivandrum,Dr. Lakshmi Narasimhan Theagarajan, Assistant Professor, IIT Palakad,Dr. Divya S Vidhyadharan Research Engineer, Augsense Lab, India,Dr. Shiju S S – Architect A I Automation, Litmus7, Trivandrum,and Dr. Athira U, A I researcher respectively.
There were a total of 65 project entries (39 colleges, 11 sections, 3 countries). The best team was awarded with USD 200+PLAQUE for first, USD135+ PLAQUE and US100+PLAQUE for third respectively. Also USD 15 for each shortlisted project. The winners for the competition were 1st- INNOVATORS, 2nd- BOOLEAN, 3rd- PHOENIX, 4rth- 2 BIT, 5th- ACES and 6th- CODE4-VYUH.

ESCOGE : March Edition

Escoge is an online quiz series organized by IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter. It is a technical quiz series which will be held once in every month. Winners of each month are selected to participate in the finals of the Escoge. Over 200 students of various sections and regions have participated in the event. In the March Edition (10th edition) there were 154 participants. The winners were 1st Elvin M Abraham, 2nd Sruthy R and 3rd Shahanas KS.

GraTEā€™7: Graduate Thesis Evaluation in 7minutes

It is an annual event where graduated students of the previous year (2020) would submit the synopsis and other details as mentioned below for a chance to be recognized as the best thesis work and be awarded a handsome cash prize.
Organized by IEEE Communication Society (ComSoc) Hyderabad jointly with ComSoc Kerala Chapter, Bangalore Chapter and Kolkata Chapter. The registration was open from 22 May 2021 to 24 April 2021. There were 11 shortlisted members and 3 shortlisted members from Masters Category.
Shortlisted graduates were asked to present their work in the final process (on the event date) to the audience and panelists. Based on the work quality and other details, 3 best ME/MTech/MS/ thesis and 4 best PhD theses (total Great 7) was awarded. The award carried 20,000/- INR for each PhD and 15,000/- INR for each MS/ME/MTech and Certificate of recognition. The certificate was also given to the corresponding Supervisor/Co-Supervisor in recognition as the best supervisor/Co-supervisor of the year. Result was announced on the presentation day.

MD at College of Engineering Poonjar

The Membership development session for the commencement of the new Communications Society (ComSoc) in IEEE Student Branch College of Engineering Poonjar was conducted on 30th April 2021. The speaker for the Membership Development session was Ruben Abraham Shibu, Kochi Hub Student Representative IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter. The Branch councillor of IEEE SB CEP, Dr. Jobymol Jacob, had attended the session and conveyed her Best wishes for the team. Mr. Nishanth Benny, the Student Representative of IEEE ComSoc Kerala chapter, had also attended the session.

The session was successful with many details regarding IEEE and IEEE ComSoc was shared with the attendees. The speakers mainly dealt with the significance & benefits of IEEE Communications Society. Then he explained the benefits of being a Comsoc member which include several standard publications, journals, magazines and Distinguished Lecture programs, etc. It gave a boost of energy to all the coordinators and members to volunteer

AMATEUR RADIO WORKSHOP

A workshop on ā€œAmateur Radioā€ was organized by IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter in collaboration with IEEE ComSoc SBC UKFCET on 17th May 2021 as part of World Telecommunication Day, 2021. It was a hands-on session for the students. The session was handled by Mr. Abhijit AR (HAM Operator, call sign: VU30SV) and Prof. Shankar J (HAM Operator, call sign: VU3FIY). The welcome address was delivered by Ms. Archana S (Documentation assistant, IEEE ComSoc SBC UKFCET). The workshop session started at 5:20PM(IST) with a live demonstration of Amateur Radio operations and explained how to communicate with other HAM operators and also they both talked with each other using Amateur Radio so that others could understand more of it. The first session was handled by Mr Abhijit AR and he also explained the various uses and advantages and disadvantages of using Amateur radio.

Morse-iT

As part of Morse Day Celebration, a Morse code challenge was organised by IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter. Morse iT was an online Morse Code decoding challenge for Engineering students , it helped students to familiarize with Morse Code and also assisted them to develop their communication skills.
This competition consisted of three phases. Firstly on 27th April, 2021 we conducted an open to all ā€œMorse Code Decode challengeā€ where we have received a total of 88 participants from different colleges. Then on 30th April, 2021 we conducted the ā€œMorse iT Decoding Competitionā€, this competition was only open for those who were the participants of the morse code challenge and there were 16 participants qualified for the finals.
On 5th May, 2021, Morse iT Decoding Final Competition was conducted from 8:30 to 11:30PM (IST). Competition was only for the shortlisted participants. The winners of this Final Decoding competition were 1st Samnoon Mu-Ad,T K (RIT,Kottayam), 2nd Divya Ann Kurien(TKM,Kollam) and 3rd Rese Raju (SJCET,Palai) respectively.

Women in Communication Engineering (WICE) organised a technical talk on the concept of massive multiple input ā€“ multiple output (MIMO) for Visible Light Communication that was delivered by Prof. Ana Garcia Armada, Professor University Carlos XII, Madrid, Spain.

The talk was mainly about the concept of massive multiple input ā€“ multiple output (MIMO) for Visible Light Communication and its application to visible light communications (VLC) will be explored.

 6 G SUMMIT DISCUSSION

  • Agenda : Conduction of Global 6G Summit, WIE Event Discussion.

IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter conducted a meeting regarding conduction of Global 6G Summit, where technological transformation of 5G to 6G will be highlighted. This event included a series of talks based on this 5G to 6G,this will also include a panel discussion that includes high profile personalities. Then after discussion Dr Gopakumar Sir has said to make a presentation on this and present it to the ExCom members. There were also discussions about the speakers for the webinars. After submitting the event proposal and about all the speakers and other technical support , it was decided that the event will be able to be conducted by the month of august or september . Finally there was a WIE event proposal discussion.

IEEE ComSoc Society Student Branch Kerala Chapter had conducted an event ā€œINGENIUMā€ in collaboration with College of Engineering perumon on 12th and 13th June 2021 at 10:00 AM ā€“ 1:00 PM(IST) . There were a total of 150 plus registrations. The event consisted of two rounds, Round 1 – Group Discussion Round and Round 2 – Mock Interview.
We formed participants into 20 groups where each group consisted of 8 members. The first round , group discussion was conducted on 12th June and started at 10:00 AM(IST) and the platform used to conduct this event was Webex Meet. Then 12 participants who performed best in group discussion were selected for the final round.
In the final round , Mock interview was conducted on 13 June at 10:00 AM and ended at 12:30 PM(IST) . The judges for the
events were Mr Anshul, senior Data Analyst at Mercedes- Benz Research and Development India and Ms. Soumya V S, Technical specialist in TATA ELXSI. According to the performance and judge’s evaluation, the winners were, 1st Jacob Joshy (CET, Trivandrum), 2nd Ajay Raj K P(RSET, Ernakulam) , 3rd Vaishna V (TKMCE, Kollam).

The session was handled by an eminent speaker Mr.Kaibin Huang, Professor from the University of Hong Kong.

TRIAC 2.0

IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, IEEE Computer Society Kerala Chapter, and IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter organized the magnificent second edition of the technical event, TRAIC 2.0 (Technical Revamping Initiative Aspired Concourse), co-hosted by IEEE SB CEK. The two-day event was conducted virtually via Google Meet on the 2nd and 3rdof October 2021. The event successfully launched a schedule of a oneday workshop covering the basics, followed by a hackathon to assess the learning process of the past day. The workshops held were Power System Analysis and Simulation using Python, Game Development, and 2D to 3D IC- Changing trends in Semiconductor IC Design. The resource persons for the above workshops cum hackathons were Er. Hari Prasad (Co-Founder and CTO of Zellab Dynamics Pvt. Ltd), Vishnu V (Technical and Operations Support Officer, GADS LLP), and Mr. Radeep Krishna R (Former Asst. Professor, Dept. of ECE at Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, Tamil Nadu) respectively. The hackathon winners were provided a pool prize of ā‚¹15,000, and currently, a Prototyping Challenge is happening right now, which offers a cash prize worth ā‚¹20,000.

Inauguration Ceremony

The Inaugural Ceremony of Technical Revamping Initiative Aspired Concourse~TRIAC 2.0 was organized on 2nd October 2021 at 9 AM IST. Prof. V K Damodaran, Fellow, IE (India); Life Senior Member, IEEE (NY), was the Chief Guest of the august ceremony. The event also witnessed the presence of dignitaries such as Er. A K Suhair (Chair, IEEE PES Kerala Chapter), Dr. Gopakumar A (Chair, IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter), Dr. Vishnu Kumar S (Vice-Chair, IEEE CS Kerala Chapter) and Prof. Sabeena K (Advisor, IEEE SB CEK). The ceremony ended at 10 AM IST.

Power System Analysis and Simulation using Python – Workshop cum Hackathon

Power System Analysis and Simulation using Python workshop was taken on 2nd and 3rd October 2021 by Er. Hari Prasad (Co-Founder and CTO of Zellab Dynamics Pvt. Ltd). About 50 participants attended the workshop.

  • Day 1: The first day of TRIAC 2.0 commenced with the session wherein the resource person covered topics including basics of Python, basics of Power System, introduction to Power System Simulation in Python, load flow analysis in Python, optimal power flow problem, and power system network topology analysis.
  • Day 2: The second day consisted of a Hackathon from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM IST. Participants were given two problems based on the topics taught the previous day.

The first position was won by Team Dhruva (College of Engineering, Attingal). The second position was bagged by Team Anonymous (College of Engineering, Thalassery), followed by Team Quintet (Government Engineering College, Thrissur) in the third position.

Game Development – Workshop cum Hackathon

A two-day workshop cum hackathon based on Game Development was handled by Vishnu V (Technical and Operations Support Officer, GADS LLP). A total of 37 students attended the session.

  • Day 1: The workshop provided a detailed explanation of Game Development, introduction to Unity, and 3D Game Development.
  • Day 2: The Hackathon started at 8 AM and ended at 8 PM, whereby the students were divided into teams to design their own game.

Team Northmen (Amal Jyothi College of Engineering) won the first position. Team Techjunkies (Amal Jyothi College of Engineering) and Team Matrix (Government College of Engineering, Kannur) secured the second and third positions respectively.

2D to 3D IC- Changing trends in Semiconductor IC Design – Workshop cum Hackathon

The two-day workshop cum Hackathon on the topic, 2D to 3D IC- Changing trends in Semiconductor IC Design, was handled by Mr. Radeep Krishna R, Former Asst. Professor, Dept. of ECE at Kalasalingam Academy of Research And Education, Tamil Nadu. About 34 students attended the session.

  • Day 1: The resource person delved into both 2D IC Design and 3D IC Design. He also explained about Partition, Floor Planning, Placement, and Routing under 2D IC Design.
  • Day 2: The Hackathon began at 10 AM IST, which was based on the application of any technique on 2D IC designing and concluded by 3:30 PM IST.

Team Ace (St. Joseph’s College of Engineering and Technology, Palai) won the first position. Team Frequency (St. Joseph’s College of Engineering and Technology, Palai) and Team Tharanga (Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology, Delhi) won the second and third positions respectively.

Inaugural Ceremony

The Inaugural Ceremony of INDICOMM 2021 was organized on 8th October 2021 at 5:30 PM IST. Mr. Amarnath Raja, Chair- Admissions and Advancements Committee, IEEE MGA was the Chief Guest of the august ceremony. The event also witnessed the presence of dignitaries such as Dr Bijuna Kunju (Chair, IEEE IA/IE/PELS Jt.Chapter Kerala), Dr. Gopakumar A (Chair, IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter).The ceremony ended at 6:00 PM IST.

Keynote #1

The first keynote session of INDICOMM 2021 was handled by Dr. Jobin Francis, Assistant professor at Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad.

Keynote #2

The second keynote session of INDICOMM 2021 commenced by 7:00 PM on 8th October 2021. The session was handled by Ms. Sarada Jaykrishnan , Chair IEEE Kerala Section ( DGM) operation, Terumo Penpol.
She started her talk with a few general topics.

Society Track#1

Evolution of Power Electronics and benefits of IEEE PELS

On the 2nd day of Indicomm, a 3-Day Technical Conclave jointly organized by IEEE IA/IE/PELS Jt. Chapter Kerala and IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter the society track was based on the Evolution of Power Electronics and benefits of IEEE PELS. The session was handled by Dr Biju K, Treasurer IEEE Kerala Section.

The session started up by giving an introduction to the history of power electronics and its significance in the industrial revolution. Topics he spoke of include the main power electronic devices, application of power electronics in industrial, transportation, residential systems etc. After that, the emergence of the IEEE Power Electronics Society, student travel grants offered by IEEE PELS, other PELS student-related activities, and PELS publications were discussed.

The session began at 5.00 P.M and lasted for One and a half hours with a good number of attendees and received very good feedback. He gave the student members a very clear idea about power electronics.

Society Track #2

Cyber forensics: New areas and challenges

On the 3rd day of INDICOMM jointly organised by IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter and IEEE IA/IE/PELS Kerala Chapter had a wonderful session on Cyber forensics: New areas and challenges with Ms Dija S – Associate director/scientist F, Cybersecurity group, C-DAC, Thiruvananthapuram.

The session discussed the rise of Cybercrimes emerging around the world and the required measurements we as an individual have to take to keep us safe from cyber attacks. Dija ma’am pointed out that “the more the technology develops, the more the cybercrime rises”.

The session was from 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM IST. The session was hosted online via Cisco WebEx Meetings. Ms Dija S shared her enormous insights on cyber forensics and overall the session was a huge success. The session received huge feedback from the participants as well.

Post Covid Job Prospects

The panel discussion on ā€˜Post Covid Job Prospects’ was one of the highlights of Indicomm 2021, a 3-Day Technical Conclave jointly organized by IEEE IA/IE/PELS Jt. Chapter Kerala and IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter. Being moderated by Mr. Varghese Cherian, Head, Technology Services, UST Global, the panel discussion conducted on October 9, 2021 from 6.00 P.M to 7.00 P.M through an online platform included eminent panellists such as Ms. Archana, HR, UST Global, and Mr. Faisal M P, Lead Technical Project Manager, Q2, Banglore.

While the discussion focused on the career opportunities before and after the global pandemic the panelists shared their perspectives on the enormous trends in the job market as well as the emerging requirements that are unique to the respective sectors.Emphasis was also given to the need of e-learning and soft skill development and how they can be capitalised for career development of a professional student. As the session enlightened the audience with a plethora of opportunities in sectors such as cybersecurity, energy, bioinformatics etc after the pandemic era, the advice by panelists on cultivating a career path was extremely beneficial for the young aspiring engineers. Later they recollected their initial interview experiences, which helped the participants understand how to persevere and respond in such situations. At the conclusion of the panel discussion, the moderator summarised the important points raised by the panellists and provided a closing note.

The attendees were provided with a comprehensive picture of the different opportunities and spaces available in various sectors and by the end of the session they were also given a glimpse of various domains of engineering, future prospects as well as their individual but interdependent role towards a sustainable future. The panelists promoted the importance of personnel development, its direct correlation with professional development and the importance of nurturing qualities like honesty, punctuality, a spirit of service and cooperation as they embark on their professional journey.

UAV-Assisted Wireless Networks

IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter organised an Essay Writing Competition as part of IEEE DAY on UAV-Assisted Wireless Networks. The competition had an enormous participation and the competition had a prize pool of Rs.2500
